How do I amend my federal tax return for this year?

by TurboTax3981 Updated 2 weeks ago

If you want to change or correct some info on your 2024 tax return after you've filed it, you may need to amend your return. For more info see Do I need to amend?

If you're going to amend your 2024 return, before you begin:

  • Wait until your return has been accepted (or mailed if paper-filing).
  • Use the same TurboTax account you used to file your original return.

Once you begin your amendment:

  • You'll see your original return.
  • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due.
  • Any changes you make to amend your federal return will automatically be transferred over to your state return.

Note: If your TurboTax navigation looks different from what’s described here, learn more.

If you haven't filed yet, you don't need to amend. Just continue working on your return and make whatever changes you need before filing.

To amend an accepted return:

  1. Go to Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend.
  2. At the amend (change) return dropdown, choose Amend using TurboTax Online.
  3. Follow the steps, making your changes, and carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return.

To amend your 2024 federal tax return in TurboTax Desktop, you must use the software for the 2024 version of TurboTax.

  • At Did you already file your return? select Yes.
  • Under Tell us a little more about your amend situation make the applicable choice.
