How do I amend my 2020 return?

SOLVEDby TurboTaxTurboTax Online14300Updated April 14, 2022

There are a few things you need to know before you can start the amendment process:

  • To amend your 2020 return, you need to use the same TurboTax account that you used to file your original 2020 return.
    • If you don’t see your 2020 return under Your tax returns & documents on the Tax Home screen, you might be in the wrong account. Use our account recovery tool to find all of your accounts.
  • Make sure you really need to amend, and that your 2020 return was accepted. You can't amend a return that hasn't been filed yet.
  • You'll need to paper file your amended return. TurboTax doesn't support e-filing 2020 amendments
  • If you used TurboTax Free Edition, you'll need to add PLUS to amend your return.

When you're ready to amend, select your product below and follow the instructions.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax
  2. On your Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, select 2020, then Amend using TurboTax Online
    • If you would like to amend your 2020 return using the TurboTax Amend CD/Download software, select the link for your operating system (Windows or Mac) to download the software. (You'll also need to download the .tax file for your 2020 return, which you can do from Your tax returns & documents)
  3. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your 2020 amended return, select the reason(s) you're amending and Continue
  4. Answer the questions on the following screens. The Refund Monitor will reset to $0—don’t worry, this is normal for amended tax returns
  5. When you reach Here's the info for your amended return, select Start next to the info you'd like to change, then select Done
  6. Carefully answer the remaining questions to finish amending your return
  1. Open your TurboTax 2020 software (you must amend your 2020 return in the 2020 version of TurboTax)
  2. Select Amend a filed return near the bottom of the homepage
  3. Select the return you wish to amend, then Continue
  4. On the Did you already file your return? screen, select Yes, I've already filed my return and then select I need to amend my 2020 return
  5. Select Continue and carefully follow the instructions to amend. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal for amended returns.
  6. Make a copy of your return by selecting Save As (Mac: select Duplicate) from the File menu. This will preserve the tax return you originally filed
    • Name the copy you're saving so that you can distinguish it from the original, for example as 2020_amended_tax_return_Smith

If you want to track the status of your amended return, use the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tracking tool. Allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.

Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you mailed your amended state return and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency.

For the 2020 tax year, the IRS will adjust your refund if you claimed the Recovery Rebate Credit but didn’t qualify, or if you overestimated the amount you should have received.

If a correction is needed, the IRS will calculate the correct amount of the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit, make the correction to the tax return, and continue processing it. There's no need at this point to amend your return, unless you didn't claim the Recovery Rebate Credit at all, and were entitled to claim it. For more information, visit the IRS Recovery Rebate Credit page.

The IRS has asked that taxpayers not amend for the unemployment exclusion, unless the unemployment tax break makes them newly eligible for tax benefits like the earned income tax credit.

If you already filed your 2020 tax return, you don't need to do anything to get these additional unemployment benefits. The IRS announced they'll automatically adjust your return and send any additional refund amount directly to you.

Some people may be newly eligible for additional deductions and credits not already included on the original tax return. In these cases, you'll likely want to amend your return to claim these additional dollars.
