Are professional dues deductible?

SOLVEDby TurboTax3088Updated January 24, 2022

If you’re self-employed, dues for trade or real estate boards, business leagues, civic or public service organizations, bar associations, etc. can be written off as a business expense as long as the membership is required for (or helps you perform) your business duties.

The professional dues deduction for employees has been suspended for tax years 2018 through 2025 per the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was signed into law in late 2017. Prior to that, they were partially deductible as a miscellaneous itemized deduction under the 2% rule.
