Why is my New York state tax higher than expected in TurboTax?
If your New York state tax seems higher than the standard rate tables suggest, don’t worry—TurboTax is calculating it correctly.
New York has a tax benefit recapture provision that applies to filers with a New York adjusted gross income (AGI) above $107,650. This can make your effective tax rate significantly higher than what you’d expect from the published brackets alone.
How the recapture works
New York’s standard progressive rate schedule—where lower portions of your income are taxed at lower rates—only applies directly when your AGI is $107,650 or less. Above that threshold, the state begins recapturing the tax savings you received from those lower brackets by adding a supplemental amount to your tax bill.
The higher your income, the more of that lower-bracket benefit gets recaptured. If your income exceeds approximately $1,077,550 (or $2,155,350 if Married Filing Jointly), the recapture is substantial enough that your marginal rate may jump to around 9.65%. This is by design under New York tax law and is calculated using the Tax Computation Worksheets in the Form IT-201 instructions.
How New York State calculates your tax
New York State uses three different methods to calculate taxes for residents. The method that applies to you depends on two specific lines on your IT-201: Line 33 (your New York state adjusted gross income [AGI]) and Line 38 (your New York state taxable income).
If your NY AGI (Line 33) is $107,650 or less and Line 38 is under $65,000, you use the New York state tax table.
If your NY AGI (Line 33) is $107,650 or less and Line 38 is $65,000 or more, you use the New York State tax rate schedule.
If NY AGI (Line 33) is more than $107,650 (regardless of your Line 38 amount), you’re required to use the New York state tax computation worksheet. This worksheet calculates your tax while applying the tax benefit recapture, which gradually removes the savings from lower tax brackets.
If your NY AGI is more than $107,650, using the tax table or the rate schedule instead of the computation worksheet will result in underpaying your taxes.
What this means for you
TurboTax is calculating your New York tax correctly. The recapture is built into the calculation automatically, following New York’s official tax computation worksheets.
Online tax bracket calculators may not account for this. Some tools show only the standard progressive brackets and don’t include the recapture adjustment, which can make TurboTax’s calculation look higher by comparison.
