If you're trying to e-file with one or more dependents on your return, but somebody else has already claimed you as a dependent and filed, you'll get rejected with IND-544 because dependents aren't allowed to claim their own dependents.
You have a few options to resolve this rejection.
Remove the dependent and e-file again
If you realize you aren't eligible to claim the person as a dependent, or if someone else has the primary right to claim them, you can remove the dependent information and resubmit your return electronically.
Go to the personal profile screen.
Scroll down to the first dependent and select Delete.
Answer Yes to confirm you want to delete this dependent.
Repeat these steps for any additional dependents.
Select File from the left menu to refile your return.
File a paper return
If you're confident you're the only person who can legally claim the individual as a dependent, you must print and mail your tax return. The IRS will review both claims manually to determine who is eligible.
Print and sign your return.
Mail the return to the IRS. Don't attach extra documentation, unless the IRS specifically requests it later.
The IRS will contact you and the other taxpayer by mail to resolve the issue. One of you will have to repay any resulting taxes, penalties, and interest.
Obtain an Identity Protection (IP) PIN
If someone else inaccurately claimed you (the primary taxpayer), you can apply for an Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) from the IRS.
Once you have the PIN:
Go to the Identity Protection PIN screen under Other tax situations in the Federal section.
Follow the instructions to add your IP PIN and attempt to e-file again.
