How do I remove income doubling due to multi-state amounts in box 16 of my W-2?

SOLVEDby TurboTax67Updated February 25, 2022

When completing your New Jersey or Pennsylvania resident return, you'll have to take additional steps to remove the double-reported income in box 16 of your W-2.

If you're a New Jersey or Pennsylvania resident but worked a job based in New York for part of the tax year, box 16 of your W-2 will show New York wages equal to box 1 of your W-2. While other states will filter out the double-reported amounts, New Jersey and Pennsylvania software requirements don't allow TurboTax to do so automatically.

Follow the instructions below to remove double-reported income (Be sure to complete your New York nonresident return before you follow these instructions):

  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and open (continue) your return
  2. Select State in the left menu, then start next to your New Jersey resident return
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions until you reach the screen titled Let’s Confirm Your Taxable State Wages
  4. Under the column Remove these wages, check the box next to the amount of New York wages listed
  5. Continue through the screens until you reach the Summary of Taxes Paid to Other States. This screen shows your state credit for tax paid to New York
    • Select Edit to review the amounts for your New York-based income and New York State tax
  6. Once you’ve reviewed your New Jersey credit for tax paid to New York, complete the remainder of your New Jersey return
  1. Sign in to your TurboTax account and open (continue) your return
  2. Select State from the left menu
  3. Select start next to your Pennsylvania resident return
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions until you reach the screen Compensation Summary. Pennsylvania and New York should be listed as separate entries
  5. Select Edit next to the entry for New York and check the box next to next to Entire amount of this income is not taxable to PA, then Continue
  6. If everything looks correct, select Done
  7. Follow the on-screen instructions until you reach the screen Taxes paid to other state(s) summary. New York should be listed
  8. Select Edit next to New York, then Continue. In the New York column, you should see the New York compensation amount and income tax due
  9. Enter the same amounts in the second column, if they’re not already present (Note: The second column represents the amount that will also be taxed by the state of Pennsylvania) and Continue
  10. The next screen will show your Pennsylvania credit for tax paid to New York. Continue and complete the remainder of your Pennsylvania return
