Maryland Standard vs Itemized Deductions

Some Maryland TurboTax customers may have overpaid their state taxes due to a TurboTax error.


If we notified you, we recommend you submit an amended state tax return as soon as possible. By filing an amended return, you’ll be able to get the money back in your pocket where it belongs!

Please select your version of TurboTax below and follow the instructions.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. On the home screen, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents and select the year you want to amend.
  3. Select Amend (change) return, then Amend using TurboTax Online.
    • If you're told to amend your return via TurboTax Desktop, follow the steps for TurboTax Desktop below instead.
  4. On the screen OK, let's get a kickstart on your 2023 amended return, select The IRS or state sent me a notice (this will allow you to amend only your state return without making changes to your federal) and Continue.
  5. On the next screen, select Something Else and Continue.
  6. On the screen Tell us which 2023 return(s) you want to amend, select 2023 state.
  7. Continue until the Let's Amend your State Taxes screen. Select Amend next to your state return, and continue through the screens to make your amendments.
    NOTE: Enter “TO OPTIMIZE STANDARD VS ITEMIZED DEDUCTIONS as the reason for amending.
  1. Open the TurboTax Desktop software.
  2. Under Need to File an Amended Return?, select Amend a Filed Return.
  3. Select Amend for the return you need to amend.
  4. Select Continue on the We’ll help you change (amend) your return screen.
  5. Select Yes, I’ve already filed my return.
  6. Choose the option that best applies when asked Tell us a little more about your amend situation and Continue.
  7. On the next screen, select Update next to State Return.
  8. Continue through the screens to make the necessary changes to your state return.
    NOTE: Enter “TO OPTIMIZE STANDARD VS ITEMIZED DEDUCTIONS as the reason for amending.
