How do I amend my return to fix incorrect city and locality taxes?

by TurboTax Updated 2 weeks ago

Due to an error affecting some imported W-2s, some TurboTax customers didn't file their city and/or locality tax return. These customers may not have reported their tax liability correctly.

If we notified you, we recommend you review your W-2 and, if needed, amend your return as soon as possible.

To correct your return, please follow the steps below:

  • Use TurboTax to amend your state tax return.
    • Once you have logged into TurboTax and selected to amend the return, you will need to revisit the Wages and Salaries section of the interview and select Update.
    • For each W-2, review the entries in boxes 18-20 and compare with the physical W-2. Make any corrections as needed.
    • Enter “TO CORRECT W-2 LOCALITY TAXES” as the reason for amending.
    • For a list of the city tax returns that TurboTax supports, please see City Tax Returns that TurboTax Supports.
      • If TurboTax supports the city return, follow the instructions provided by TurboTax to file the amended state tax return. Most states require amendments to be paper filed. The TurboTax instructions will provide the applicable information for filing the state amendment.
      • If TurboTax does not support the city return, follow the instructions at the state/locality web site to file the return.
  • Save a copy of your amended state tax return for your records.
