Some Michigan TurboTax customers need to amend their taxes due to an error with Box 18, local wages.

If we notified you, we recommend you review your W-2 and, if needed, amend your city tax return as soon as possible.

Please select your version of TurboTax below and follow the instructions.

TurboTax Online

  • Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Michigan City tax return. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records to verify the correct amount.

  • Log in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2024 return. In Tax Home,
scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and go to the 2024 folder. If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2024 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF). Then scroll down to the bottom and select Add A State.
Note. This gives you access to your city return without amending the federal or state returns.

  • On the You’ve already got a head start on state taxes screen, go to the gray ribbon on the side of the screen and select Federal. Then select Wages & Income.

  • On the Wages and income screen, select Add/Edit next to Job (W-2).

  • On the Your W-2 summary, select Edit next to the W-2.

  • Scroll down to the Local taxes section, and verify the number shown in box 18 matches the amount reported on the physical W-2. Make corrections as needed. Then select Continue.

  • From the 2024 TAXES menu on the left, select State Taxes, then Your State Returns.

  • On the Status of your state returns screen, select Edit next to Michigan.

  • On the Your 2024 Michigan taxes are ready for us to check screen, scroll down and select Edit next to Other situations. Then select Revisit next to Michigan City Tax Returns.

  • Continue through the screens until you reach Change a Previous Michigan City Return. Then select I’d like to amend my 2024 Michigan City return. Then Continue.

  • On the Confirm or Enter Previous Refund or Tax Paid screen, enter the amount you wrote down in step one in the appropriate box, then select Continue.

  • On the Copy Federal Amended Explanation screen, select No.

  • On the Tell Us Why You’re Amending screen, enter “TO CORRECT CITY WAGES”. Then select Done.

  • On the How to File an Amended Return in Michigan City screen, select Continue.

  • From the left hand menu, select Tax Tools, then select Print Center. Select Print, save or preview this year’s return.

  • From the TurboTax Print Center screen, select 2024 Michigan return and Just my tax return(s). Then select View or print forms.
Note. You are only amending the Michigan City return.

  • Once your City tax return has been printed, you need to sign, date, and mail the amended City return, along with any balance due using one of the following addresses.
    ● For Detroit City tax returns:
    ○ Refund or zero returns: Michigan Department of Treasury, Lansing, MI 48956
    ○ Balance Due returns: Michigan Department of Treasury, Lansing, MI 48929.
    ● For all other cities, see the instructions here.
    ● Make the check payable to the Michigan City and print the last four digits of your Social Security number along with “2024 Michigan City Income Tax” on the front of the check. Do not staple the check to the return.
NOTE. Be sure to Print and Save the amended return for your records.
