How do I amend my 2025 tax return to correct the Iowa Retirement Exclusion?

Due to a TurboTax error, some Iowa taxpayers incorrectly excluded certain non-qualified retirement income from their state taxable income. As a result, taxpayers’ underpaid their Iowa state income tax.

If we notified you, we recommend you review your return and amend your return as soon as possible.

To review your return, follow the steps below:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax (if you are using TurboTax Desktop, open your software and sign in to your account)

  2. Follow these instructions to Amend your state tax return

  3. On the Reason for Amending Original Return screen, enter 9 for the Reason Code

  4. Scroll down the page until you see Explanation of changes to income, deductions, or credits

  5. Enter "SCH 1 Line 7" as the line reference and "TO CORRECT NON-QUALIFIED RETIREMENT EXCLUSION" as the reason

  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to e-file your amended state tax return

  7. Save a copy of your amended state tax return for your records
