How do I amend my 2024 Virginia state tax return to correct the Military Benefits Subtraction?
Due to a TurboTax error, some Virginia taxpayers didn't receive the military benefits subtraction. TurboTax incorrectly prevented taxpayers under 55 from claiming the subtraction.
As a result, taxpayers might have overpaid their state income taxes.
If we notified you, we recommend you review your state return and, if needed, amend it as soon as possible.
To correct your return, please follow the steps below:
Use TurboTax to amend your state tax return.
Write down the original refund or balance due amount for your Virginia state income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records to verify the correct amount.
Once the return is open, revisit the Virginia state tax interview, start the Income section and enter the Military Benefits Subtraction.
Based on your response, check the VA refund/balance due meter at the top of the screen.
If the VA meter shows a refund/balance due amount, then the return needs to be amended and you will need to continue with the amend instructions.
If the VA meter does not show a change, then the return does not need to be amended and you can stop.
Enter “TO CLAIM THE MILITARY BENEFITS SUBTRACTION” as the reason for amending.
Follow the instructions provided by TurboTax to print, sign and date the amended state tax return. The amended return will need to be mailed to the address provided with the instructions.
