How do I amend my 2024 Connecticut state tax return to correct interest on US government obligations?

by TurboTax Updated 6 days ago

Some Connecticut TurboTax customers might have underpaid their state taxes due to incorrectly deducting interest income.

If we notified you, we recommend you review your state return and, if needed, amend it as soon as possible to avoid additional penalties and interest on the unpaid balance.

To correct your return, please follow the steps below:

  • Use TurboTax to amend your state tax return.
    • Enter “TO CORRECT INTEREST ON US GOVERNMENT OBLIGATIONS” as the reason for amending.
    • Revisit the Income section of the Connecticut return and verify the amount of interest income you reported as not taxable in Connecticut is correct.
      • On the Interest Income Adjustment screen, select Yes.
      • On the Connecticut Interest Income Adjustment screen, review the details for the interest you reported as not taxable to Connecticut. To access the details, place your cursor in the box where the total interest is and then hit the back button. This will pull up the details you entered. You can review and make your corrections here. Once you are finished, select Close.
  • Follow the instructions provided by TurboTax to print, sign, date, and mail the amended state tax return, along with any balance due.
  • Save a copy of your amended state tax return for your records.
