How do I amend my 2023 return to correct tax on my Social Security benefits?

by TurboTax11 Updated 5 months ago

For customers living in certain foreign countries, Social Security benefits were reported as taxable when these benefits should have been excluded. As a result, the tax liability was overstated, and customers overpaid their federal, and if applicable, state tax liability.

If we notified you, we recommend you submit an amended federal, and if applicable, state tax return as soon as possible. By filing an amended return, you’ll be able to get the money back in your pocket where it belongs!

Please select your version of TurboTax below and follow the instructions.

  1. Write down the original refund or balance due amount(s) for your Federal and, if applicable, State income taxes. We recommend you check the paper/PDF copy of your return(s), or your banking records to verify the correct amount.
  2. Log in to the TurboTax account where you prepared your 2023 return.
  3. In Tax Home, scroll down to Your tax returns & documents, and choose 2023. If you have not already done so, we recommend that you print a copy of your original 2023 tax return for your records by selecting Download/print return (PDF).
