Received 1099-MISC for medical payments. TT seems to think I'm self-employed, but am not. How can this be resolved? Do I need Home & Business version of TT?

I am filing taxes for my father.  He's retired and received a 1099-MISC with medical payments filled in Box 6 (and only that box).  After filling in the form, several errors occurred during the review.  They all pertained to missing self-employed business information.  I'm using the 2018 Premier version.  My father is not self-employed, but recieved medical insurance reimbursements from his previous business on the 1099-MISC.

In another post I read the following concerning 1099-MISC forms for non self-employed:

"After you enter the info from your form, we’ll ask you a few questions to make sure it’s a self-employment 1099-MISC. If not, we’ll link it to the correct income section of your return."

I never saw any questions after entering the 1099-MISC form and am thinking that it is not processing the form correctly since my father is not self-employed.

Do I need to add a ficticious self-employed business?

Can this be done with Premier version, or do I need Home & Business version?

How should this be resolved?

Unfortunately, this is the treatment for income in Box 6. On the back of the 1099, are the Box numbers and the treatment of the income in each box.

Box 6. For individuals, report on Schedule C (Form 1040). https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1099msc.pdf

The only reason it's not in Box 7 is because of the line of work you are in. The IRS just requires medically-related income to go in that box. Per their own instruction (see link below), the income goes on Schedule C.

Thanks, Coleen.  If this is going to create a schedule C, does this mean I need Turbotax Home & Business, or can this be done with Turbotax Premier?

If you need to add expenses, you will need to upgrade, but the income alone can go in Premier.
