I am confused between the CD turbotax and the online version. I submitted my Federal and State taxes last week and when I sign in online it indicates I've barely begun.

I want to switch everything to online access for future use. I've used turbotax the last 2 years (2015 and 2016).

next year if you still want to use online, it can import the information from your 2016 tax return file. you need to do this when you start the tax return.
You'll find you are better off sticking with the CD version.

Is this because the import is messy / incomplete? I'm a little concerned about the future of CDs - my recent laptops don't have CD/DVD ports and I'm guessing in a few years they'll be like cassette tapes, accessible only with older equipment and increasingly irrelevant.

The desktop version is also available as a direct download, so you don't need a physical CD.

You cannot save a tax return completed using the CD/download product installed on your computer to the online version. To be saved in the online account, the return must be completed using the online product.

Thanks. Can I convert the CD/download forms completed the last 2 years to online?

No you cannot.

Ok guess I'll either 'start fresh' with online or continue CD use for now. Thanks for clarifying.
