Why doesn't Turbotax automatically calculate the State adoption tax credit carryover?

I adopted a child in 2017 and was not able to realize the entire Federal and State (Ca) tax credit on my 2017 taxes. Why does 2018 TurboTax not automatically calculate the carryover? Turbotax should have all the information necessary. The instructions to calculate the carryover are not clear and I'm worried that I won't get the credit amount correct.

Let's check it out: in Forms Mode open the Calif Credits Wks and under Current Credits the second row is the Child Adoption credit. Any carryover from 2017 should have landed in the Carryover Amount field if you ran the year-to-year transfer.

If it's not there you can enter the carryover $$. You can find that amount in your (TurboTax) 2017 California return, the Credits That Reduce Tax Statement (Sch P Cr Stmt in the forms menu), on page 2, Code 197, Child Adoption, column (d) Credit carryover.
