I am using Home and Business 2018. When I enter vehicle, it never asks how much 179 deduction I want to take. How do I get that screen to come up?

When I enter the information for the business vehicle I purchased in 2018 the system never gives me the opportunity to enter the amount of 179 deduction I want to take.  How do I get that screen to come up?

After you enter your mileage information, continue until you get to Now let's select your vehicle deduction screen

Select I want to enter my actual expenses without estimating them first.

  • Once you enter actual expenses, you'll eventually be asked to put in your cost for the vehicle, and then the 179 option will show up.

That is the problem.  The 179 option screen does not show up after I've entered all the actual vehicle expenses.

Sorry, this was pilot error.  I incorrectly entered the mileage number so it was less than 50%. My bad.

If you want the 179 screen to come up, try entering a lower mileage amount. Behind the scenes, TurboTax is calculating the depreciation (not section 179) on your car. If the mileage is higher than your actual expenses and depreciation, the 179 screen won't generate.
