Generally, once a return is electronically field or mailed, you are not able to reverse the refund method. You will need to contact the California Franchise Tax Board at (800) 852-5711.  It's website does not provide information on the reversal of a refund method.

However, can do the following to reverse a refund method after a federal return has been filed:

  • Wait about a week after you've received confirmation that your e-filed return was accepted (or 2-3 weeks after mailing, if you paper-filed).
  • Contact the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Refund Hotline at 1-800-829-1954 to explain that you want your refund transferred back to the current tax year. Select option 2 to speak to a live representative.
  • Make an appointment with your local IRS office by calling 844.545.5640.

You should receive a refund check refund in approximately 3-4 weeks. Electronic deposit is not available in these cases.
