Are retirement plan (CalSTRS) reimbursements for health insurance premiums reportable as income

CalSTRS reimburses Medicare premiums paid by retirees. The reimbursements do not show up on 1099-R as income. They have never been taxable per CalSTRS representative. TurboTx picked up Medicare deductions from my social security on 1099 SSA as an expense. It was fully reimbursed by CalSTRS. How do I deal with it so that expense is gone and reimbursement is nullified, not taxed.

If you are fully reimbursed for the Medicare premiums then remove those premiums where they were entered from the SSA-1099.  The reimbursement is not taxable but you cannot take the deduction for a reimbursed expense.

To enter, edit or delete Social Security benefits reported on form SSA-1099

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business)
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security
  • On Social Security (SSA-1099, RRB-1099), click the start or update button

Or enter ssa-1099 in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen.  Click on Jump to ssa-1099
