Can I deduct executor expenses from my tax liability? There is no money from the estate.

My mother had only personal property. She did not own any real estate or anything of great value. She lived on Social Security and a VA widow's pension. I could not compensated from the estate since there is nothing to paid with. I have considerable travel expenses because she lived in another state. Can I deduct those expenses from my own tax liability? Thanks.

First, I would like to express my condolences on the passing of your mother.

No, unfortunately, you cannot deduct executor expenses from your tax liability, the IRS considers this a "personal" expense.

Thanks, I was afraid this was not possible. In the future I will seriously consider if being an executor is worth all the trouble.

Glad I could help.  I have had the same experience as an executor so I feel your pain!

If I may ask another question. Is it okay to ask my three siblings to help with these expenses? We all are the beneficiaries. Thanks again. Jean

I would say absolutely since you are all 3 the beneficiaries... it doesn't seem fair that just you incur all the expenses.
