I purchased a new vehicle last year and am wondering if it's worth it to claim it. Also can I claim miles commuting to school as a student? I am in Michigan.

Purchased a new vehicle in Michigan and wondering if it is worth it to claim it on my atxes to increase my return. We have state income tax and from the brief research I did I am seeing that it is not worth it but I would like to know for sure. Also wondering If I can claim gas or mileage when commuting to college since I am a student.

Commuting to work or school has never been deductible.  As for your car, if you had a whole bunch of other "big ticket" itemized deductions like mortgage interest and property taxes, you might be able to use the sales tax paid on the car on your federal return.   But you say you are a student, so that seems unlikely.  If you are single, you have a standard deduction of $12,000 that is "tax free."
