TT-B Won't Save My Return

I am using Turbo Tax for Business 2017...the CD version. I'm on Windows 10 (up-to-date). I have used TT for my business for many years.

I just started this year's return. I am unable to save my file. When I select SAVE (or SAVE-AS) and then accept the default name that TT-B suggests, I get an error message saying "File not found. Check the file name and try again." Even if I change the filename to something simple ("TaxReturn"), I get the same error. I've tried multiple locations on my hard drive with the same problem.

TT-B seems to be looking for a file rather than trying to create a new one.

My program is up-to-date. I have tried saving to various locations with the same results. I have tried different file names. I have rebooted several times. I've tried running with no other programs running. I've disabled Defender (and have no other anti-virus running).

I'm dead-in-the-water!

Thanks for assistance.

TT-B Won't Save My Return

Have you progressed beyond the Personal Info section of the return?

TT-B Won't Save My Return

Yes. All the information was extracted from last year's return. I first encountered the problem when TT-B asked to save in preparation for downloading the State return. I then tried saving before I got that far and encountered the same problem.

I had the same problem- it is a windows 10 update issue. Here is the fix. Go to settings, update + security, open defender security center, virus and threat protection, virus and threat protection settings, TURN OFF controlled folder access.

This could happen to a lot of people. Very annoying and time wasting.

Same issue, but the Controlled Folder Access feature was already turned OFF.

TT-B Won't Save My Return

Update:  I did the suggested steps to turn ON/OFF controlled folder access between reboots, but no change.  I tried to do the steps to just allow TurboTax as the allowed apps but the wheel would just spin and exit the settings screen without prompting for the application.

So obviously something wrong with Defender or the app supporting Manage Settings for Controlled Folder so then I ran SFC /SCANNOW and it failed at about 72% and indicated issues with files it could not repair.

So to resolve that I then ran DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth,
Followed by another SFC /SCANNOW which was successful and indicated files were repaired.

After doing both of the steps above, I retried TurboTax and it worked in that I was able to port information from 2017 files and do a Save As to TAX2018 files.  So my system now has TurboTax on the allowed apps list with Controlled Folder Access turned ON.

TT-B Won't Save My Return

very same issue but this time it was with TT Premium ... followed the steps suggested above and it seemed to work ... it's very frustrating to spend several hours on taxes and then be unable to save them or print them or submit them ... since it is a known problem, I'm surprised that TT hasn't dealt with it ...

Thank you M. That worked for me. That was rediculous. I lost a couple hours of work plus an hour trouble shooting. If you are listing Turbo Tax tech support, this should have been at the top of your useless help menu with one phrase "unable to save in windows 10". What the heck. If you can't write an end-around update to the software the least you can do is write an update to your front end help responses.

TT-B Won't Save My Return

Absolutely ridiculous.  Had this issue yesterday.  Looked for help on Turbotax support page.  No answer so called Turbo Tax support.  Wasted an hour of my life on the phone.

They had me set up ransomware protection in windows.  Did not work.  They suggested that I buy a USB drive to try to save the file to it.  I asked if they were going to reimburse me for it.  The said no so I refused that option.   After an hour of stupid suggestions I asked how I can get my money back on the software that I had just bought from Best Buy.  They did offer to send me a free download link.

By this time I was done with them.  I googled my issue and within 2 minutes I found your solution and it worked.  Why isn't this on tech supports top of the list and why hasn't this been fixed by now.  Last year of using turbo tax for me.

Same issue.  I turned the Controlled Folder setting off as recommended so I could save my file, and then re-enabled it and added turbotax to the allowed list.  Now it works fine.  Really should be fixed by Intuit though.

Actually - DON'T turn off controlled folder access in Windows 10!  It's a solid protection vs ransomware.  Instead, permit a Controlled Folder Access exception for TurboTax.exe .
