Can we claim job related expenses if we were not provided the W-2 but have proof of the pay stubs that taxes were taken out? The job was for one month.

My husband worked at a job for one month and was not provided a W-2 though we have the two pay stubs that show taxes were deducted. He had to buy several uniforms and equipment that he can no longer use or wear. Can we claim these job-related expenses?

Yes, if the items he purchased meet the requirements for job-related expenses you can take a deduction for them.  However, job-related expenses are only deductible in excess of 2% of your AGI in order to be deductible and you must itemize instead of taking the standard deduction.

Also, to report his wages that you did not receive a W-2 for, you will need to enter it by doing the following:

  1. Click Federal
  2. Income and Expenses
  3. Scroll down, click Show More next to Less Common Income
  4. Click Start next to Miscellaneous Income, 1099-A, 1099-C
  5. Start next to Other income not already reported on a Form W-2 or Form 1099

If we are filing jointly, is it 2% of our total AGI or just his?
