I did not know for the 2016 tax year that I wouldn't receive a 1098-E due to it being under $600. Is it too late to try to claim the interest paid in 2016?

I found the tax document for this year's taxes and had a small amount that I paid toward interest but I received it back in credit. For the 2016 year I paid just over $450 but I never claimed it because I didn't know to look.

You can amend your 2016 tax return to add the 1098-E form and claim the deduction. Amending instructions are below.
