I have a parent plus loan. I am the parent. I pay the loan. I received a 1098E. Where do I enter it?

The student has graduated and is no longer my dependent, but I am still paying on the loan.  Where on Turbo Tax do I enter my interest paid?

Turbo Tax will not allow you to enter this info if the student is not a dependent. I think this is incorrect but I cannot find a work around.

You still qualify to take this deduction as long as the student was your dependent at the time you took out the loan.

Enter this expense in TurboTax Online by following these steps:

  1. Go to Federal on the left side of your screen.
  2. Go to Deductions and Credits. Click See All Tax Breaks.
  3. Click on Education, then Start Student Loan Interest (Form 1098-E)

If you are using a Desktop Product:

  1. Under the Federal Taxes tab, click on Deductions and Credits.
  2. Say I'll choose what I work on.
  3. Under Education, Start Student Loan Interest Paid (Form 1098-E)

See the IRS tax topic on the student loan interest deduction for more information.
