You have only one state of residence. This is called your domicile. Your domicile is where your permanent home is. Factors that go into determining where your domicile is includes the location of significant family and friends, community ties, your doctor and other professionals, voter registration, and where you earn your living.

If you are a resident of New York, that is to say that New York is your domicile, then you would only need to file a California tax return if you have California source income. Then you would file a California nonresident return along with your New York State resident return.

Are you renting out the condo?
