Why do I get a blank screen when installing TurboTax Desktop on Windows 10?

Some customers are experiencing a blank screen when they launch TurboTax Desktop in Windows 10. TurboTax will launch but instead of getting the "Continue Your Tax Return" page the customer is presented with a blank white screen.

Who does this affect?

 This issue only affects customers who are on Windows 10.


 If you are experiencing this issue please try the following workarounds:

Uninstall your video driver:

  1. Click the start menu
  2. Type "Device Manager"
  3. Click on Device Manager in the search results
  4. Expand the Display Adapters section
  5. Right Click the Video Driver (Intel HD Graphics)
  6. Select "Uninstall Device"
  7. Make sure "Delete the driver software for this device" is NOT checked
  8. Click Uninstall
  9. DO NOT restart your computer as the driver will automatically re-install
  10. Re-launch TurboTax
  11. Repeat the steps if you re-boot your computer

Change registry key in Windows Registry: (Note: Only complete these steps if the above workaround did not work. Use extreme caution when performing these steps):

  1. Click Start
  2. Type "Regedit" and press enter
  3. Allow the program to run by clicking Yes
  4. Navigate the registry to this location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Avalon.Graphics
  5. Click once on Avalon.Graphics
  6. Click Edit in the menu
  7. Hover over New
  8. Select DWORD (32-bit) Value
  9. Type DisableHWAcceleration
  10. Double-Click DisableHWAcceleration
  11. Change the Value Data to 1
  12. Click Ok
  13. Exit the registry
  14. Re-launch TurboTax
  15. If you wish to remove DisableHWAcceleration follow steps 1-5
  16. Right click DisableHWAcceleration and select Delete
  17. Confirm the action by clicking YES
