Do I have to repay a health insurance credit for coverage I could have dropped?

I got a new job mid-year, and was given health insurance from my date of hire. Before that I had been paying for coverage from the marketplace.

I was given bad information and told that I had to keep my marketplace insurance for 2 extra months, and ended up with double coverage.  Now it says I have to pay back the tax credit I got for coverage I could have dropped. The marketplace insurance coverage was never used - my employer's plan covered everything retroactively to my hire date.

Do I have to pay back that credit, when I could have given up the insurance? I have forms from my work saying I was covered.

It is your total income that is making the advance credit repayable and you did get bad advice on keeping the insurance those extra 2 months but there is nothing you can do about it now.
