Once the program is installed, TurboTax doesn't know the difference between the CD and download version.   So if you install the 2017 program from a download, it should recognize the *.tax2016 data file from this year's return.   The *.tax2016 data file would be the same whether it was prepared from a CD or from a download.

Do you have the *.tax2016 data file?  If it's on a different computer,  you'll need to move a copy of it to the computer on which you install your 2017 program.    For Windows version, the best location to place the *.tax2016 data file is in the My Documents\TurboTax directory, which is the default directory for tax data files.   That is the easiest place for the 2017 program to find it, since that's where it looks first.

Also if moving to a new computer, be sure you archive copies of your prior year tax data files and tax PDFs to some kind of backup media in case you need them in the future.

NOTE:  Remember all PDF tax documents and *.taxYYYY data files are very sensitive files, since they contain your personal ID info, financial data, and possibly bank account numbers, etc.  Be sure to store them safely and securely to guard against computer theft, hacking, etc.

If you have the tax data files from the 2021 return on your computer from the 2021 TurboTax desktop software you used to complete and file the 2021 tax return, the tax data file will be in the TurboTax folder on the Documents director.  When you start a New Tax Return using the 2022 TurboTax software there will be a list of files for you to choose to transfer.  The 2021 tax data files will have a file extension of .tax2021
