I heard there was an extension for those in the Hurricane Harvey impacted areas. I filed an extension to 10-16-2017 for my 2016 taxes. Do I now have till January 2018.

Is there a filing extension for those in the Hurricane Harvey impacted counties? I filed an extension due 10-16-2017 for my 2016 taxes. I understand I have until January to file now. True?

But...be fore-warned that the TurboTax online software may shut down in October  (last year it extended into November...but no promises that will happen this year)

......make sure you get your .tax2016 datafile downloaded to your home computer, because after TTX shuts down in Oct (or Nov), you will have to use the desktop software to finish off your taxes....and probably will not be able to e-file after mid-Oct either (would probably have to mail-file after the October extension deadline).

Excellent advice as access to the .tax2016 file will be locked out during the change over period from 2016 to 2017.

You don't need to file any paperwork to get the Harvey extension, the IRS will verify your eligibility from your address.

Also note this is not an extension of the deadline to pay taxes.  If you owe 2016 taxes, they were due April 17, 2017 and interest and penalties will continue to accrue until you pay them.
