I already filed my taxes and TurboTax added a penalty for not having health insurance, but now I heard you don’t have to report your health coverage status. I want my money back.
The executive order and the House of Representatives’ vote have not repealed the Affordable Care Act. The executive order directed federal agencies to exercise authority to reduce taxpayer burden so the IRS did make a change that will allow taxpayers to e-file or paper file their tax returns without rejection if they didn’t report their health coverage status. You are, however, required to pay any penalties you owe since the executive order does not change current ACA rules that are in place. Taxpayers who do not report their healthcare status may receive follow-up questions and correspondence from the IRS.
