E-file reject error IND-183-01: The Spouse did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN)

If you're spouse has ever gotten an IP PIN or CP01A notice from the IRS, or opted in to their IP PIN pilot program, you must enter their 2016 IP PIN to validate their identity so you can e-file.

You'll get this rejection message if your spouse's IP PIN is incorrect or missing:

IND-183-01: The Spouse did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with the correct number.

Solution

You'll need to leave the TurboTax app and sign in to a browser:

  1. Sign out of the app by tapping TurboTax icon in the upper-left corner > App Settings > Sign Out.
  2. Open your browser (either on your device or a computer) and sign in at MyTurboTax.com (use your app login).
  3. Fix and refile your return in TurboTax Online. Instructions
