Rejection code IND-517: A Dependent SSN in the return must not be the same as the Primary or Spouse SSN on another return where the Primary Taxpayer or Spouse was claimed as an exemption

Most of the time, this rejection occurs when a dependent you're trying to claim has already claimed themselves and filed their own return.

Less commonly, you can get rejected with IND-517 if you entered your dependent's Social Security number incorrectly or if somebody filed a fraudulent return using your dependent's Social Security number.

Solution

First, let's verify that you entered your dependent's Social Security number correctly:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax if you haven't already signed in.
    • Click or tap any orange "Fix" buttons you see before proceeding to Step 2.
  2. At the Welcome back to TurboTax message, click or tap Personal Info near the top (not the gray "Fix It Now" button).
    • Mobile devices: Tap the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap Personal Info.
  3. On the Personal info summary screen, compare your dependent's SSN to the number on their Social Security card.
    • If it's wrong, click or tap Edit to fix, then Continue.

Next, follow the set of instructions (I, II, III, or IV) that apply to your situation.

I. Your dependent's SSN was incorrect (you had to fix it):

  1. Click File in the upper-right area (on mobile devices, tap in the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap File).
  2. At the Welcome back screen, click or tap Continue. Do not select "Fix my return" (you've already done that).
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to e-file your return.

II. Your dependent's SSN was correct, they already claimed themselves, and you want to e-file:

You'll need to remove the dependent so the e-file server doesn't reject your return again.

  1. On the Personal info summary screen, click or tap Delete next to the dependent's name.
  2. Answer Yes to confirm, then click or tap Done at the bottom of the following screen.
  3. Click File in the upper-right area (on mobile devices, tap in the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap File).
  4. At the Welcome back screen, click or tap Continue. Do not select "Fix my return" (you've already done that).
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to e-file your return.

III.  Your dependent's SSN was correct, they already claimed themselves, and you still want to claim them :

You'll need to paper-file your return because the e-file server won't let the same SSN go through twice.

  1. Click File in the upper-right area (on mobile devices, tap in the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap File).
  2. At the Welcome back screen, click or tap Continue. Do not select "Fix my return."
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to file by mail.

Unless your dependent later amends their return by removing their exemption, the IRS will eventually contact both of you to determine who gets to claim the dependent. Once they've figured it out, one of you will have to repay any additional taxes (plus possible penalties and interest) attributed to the duplicate claim.

IV. Your dependent's SSN was correct, and you don't know who claimed them:

You'll need to paper-file; follow the instructions in III above.
