I got a CP23 notice from the IRS

If you got a notice from the IRS, don’t worry. We’ll do our best to help you figure out what to do next.

The CP23 notice means that the IRS made changes to your return, and you now owe money.

They found a difference between the amount of estimated tax payments on your tax return and the amount they posted to your account. This notice could also cover other changes the IRS made while processing your return.

First, compare the payments on the notice to your records and:

  • Verify that all your estimated tax payments are listed.
  • Check the amount applied (if any) from the prior year.

If you agree with the changes the IRS made, you’ll need to:

  • Pay the amount owed by the date on the notice (see the electronic payment options). If you can’t pay the full amount you owe, you can make payments.
  • Correct the copy of your tax return that you keep for your own records.

If you don't agree with the changes, contact the IRS within 60 days from the date of your notice. You can do this:

  • By telephone—the number is on your notice and calling is the fastest way to resolve many errors.
  • By mail—include a copy of the notice and allow 30-60 or more days for a resolution.
