I moved to Illinois in late 2015. My house in Missouri sold at a loss in Jan 2016. I have no other MO income for 2016. Do I need to file a MO state tax form?

The house in Missouri was my primary residence until I moved to Illinois in 2015. So when the Missouri house sold in 2016, it was no longer my primary residence. Not sure if that makes a difference.

Unfortunatley, MO says you need to file, as you have more than $600 of MO income.  However, with the sale being a loss, there will be no taxes due to MO.

"You do not have to file a Missouri return if you are not required to file a federal return. If you are required to file a federal return, you may not have to file a Missouri return if:

  • you are a resident and have less than $1,200 of Missouri adjusted gross income;
  • you are a nonresident with less than $600 of Missouri income; or
  • your Missouri adjusted gross income is less than the amount of your standard deduction plus your personal exemption."
