E-file reject R0000-500-01: The name or Social Security number for the first taxpayer doesn't match IRS records

This rejection can occur if the name or Social Security number for the first person listed on the return has been entered incorrectly.

Less commonly, this rejection can be caused by a mismatch with the IRS database.


Follow these steps to make sure your info has been entered correctly. Your name and Social Security number in TurboTax should match your Social Security card. See also Helpful Tips, below.

  1. Sign in to TurboTax if you haven't already signed in.
    • Click or tap any orange "Fix" buttons you see before proceeding to the next step.
  2. At the Welcome back to TurboTax message, click or tap Fix It Now.
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to fix the cause of the rejection and re-file your return.

Alternative Solution

You can also go directly to your personal information screen to make additional corrections:

  1. With your return open, click Personal Info (on mobile devices, tap the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap Personal Info).
  2. On the Personal info summary screen, click or tap Edit next to the first taxpayer listed.
  3. Make any corrections, then click or tap Continue.
  4. Click File in the upper-right area (on mobile devices, tap in the upper-left corner to open the side menu, then tap File).
  5. At the Welcome back screen, click or tap Continue. Do not select "Fix my return" (you've already done that).
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions to proceed with the filing process.

Helpful Tips

  • Transposing the Social Security number is a common error, so review your entry in TurboTax digit by digit.
  • If your name or Social Security number changed recently, and the new info got rejected, try your previous info (or vice-versa).
  • For multiple middle names, use the initial for the first middle name only (for example, John E. W. Doe should be entered as John E Doe in TurboTax).
  • Hyphenated last names go into the Last name field in their entirety.
  • Generally, with nonhyphenated multiple last names, the very last name goes into the Last name field, for example:
    • Richard L. Brown Roe should be entered as Richard L. Roe
    • Richard (no middle initial) Brown Roe should be entered as Richard (no middle initial) Roe

What if everything already matches my Social Security card?

It could be that the info in the IRS database is incorrect, or that your recently-changed name or Social Security number isn't in their database yet.

Keep following the onscreen instructions and we'll help you file your return by mail. You won't be able to e-file even though your information was entered correctly.

Tip: To prevent this rejection next year, call the Social Security Administration (SSA) at 1-800-772-1213 to verify their records (this is where the IRS database pulls from). If the info is wrong, please allow 4–6 weeks for correction.
