If I had a small side business, but made less than $1,000, do I need to claim it? If so, how do I do that?

I sell Mary Kay, but only to my family and for personal use. I did not make much, and would have to find out exactly how much, but I know it was less than $1,000, possibly even less than $600.

If that is your only income and you earned less than $400, after your expenses, then you are not required to file a tax return.

If that's not your only income, then you are required to report it on your tax return.

For more information on filing requirements, please visit the Turbo tax FAQ below.

This income will be entered as self employment. You will need Turbo Tax Deluxe or higher in order to file it. Follow the directions below to enter it into Turbo tax Deluxe:

  • Sign in to your return.
  • Click take me to my return.
  • Click federal taxes tab, at the top of the page.
  • Click check for more income.
  • Click the skip to see all income link.
  • Click the drop down menu next to self employment.
  • Next to the income and expenses option, click start.
  • On the next screen, answer yes to the question, "Do you have self employment income or expenses?"
