The control number (box D) is not required to enter your W-2 to complete your tax return. Simply leave this number field blank or skip this question of TurboTax, click Skip Import and you will be directed to manually enter your W-2.

It appears that some employers or payroll processors specified to TurboTax that the control number is required for importing, but then did not put a control number on the W-2s. In that case you will not be able to import your W-2. You will have to enter it manually. This is an error by the payroll processor or the employer's payroll department.

Turbo Tax should SAY at this step of importing that not all employers use box d and that we will be unable to import our W2 if there is no box d.  It is ANNOYING that I had to waste so much time before I found this.  Come on Intuit!  Customer service is important!
