E-file rejection errors IND-185, IND-186, IND-187, IND-188: Expired ITIN (Primary, Spouse or Dependent); or Inactive ITIN

How to fix an e-filed return that was rejected with one of these errors:

  • IND-185: 'PrimarySSN' in the Return Header is an expired ITIN. If you resubmit your return electronically, it may be delayed and the credits associated with the Primary ITIN will be disallowed. To avoid any processing delays, please file a paper return and attach Form W-7 along with supporting documentation to renew the Primary ITIN.
  • IND-186: 'SpouseSSN' in the return is an expired ITIN. If you resubmit your return electronically, it may be delayed and the credits associated with the Spouse ITIN will be disallowed. To avoid any processing delays, please file a paper return and attach Form W-7 along with supporting documentation to renew the Spouse ITIN.
  • IND-187: A 'DependentSSN' in the return is an expired ITIN. If you resubmit your return electronically, it may be delayed and the credits associated with the Dependent ITIN will be disallowed. To avoid any processing delays, please file a paper return and attach Form W-7 along with supporting documentation to renew the Dependent ITIN.IND-188: 'InactiveITINReturnInd' is checked in the Return Header, but the return does not meet the necessary conditions.
