How do I get a copy of my tax return or transcript from the IRS?

A free IRS return transcript via mail or online is the quickest option and has most of the information from your return. Go to the IRS transcript site and follow the online instructions.

To get a transcript via mail (which most people can do)

To get a transcript via mail you’ll need:

This option will allow you to:

  • Get your transcript in 5 to 10 calendar days to the address on file for you with the IRS (if you’ve moved recently, you might not be able to get a transcript via mail).
  • Choose different transcript types (for the one with your tax return info, select “Tax return transcript”).

 

To get a transcript online

To get a transcript online you’ll need:
  • Your SSN and date of birth.
  • Your filing status from your latest tax return (for example; single, married filing jointly etc.).
  • The mailing address from your latest tax return.
  • Access to your email account.
  • A mobile phone number with your name on the account (prepaid won’t work).
  • Your personal account number from a credit card, car loan, mortgage, home equity loan, or home equity line of credit.

This option will allow you to:

  • View, print or download your transcript.
  • Access different transcript types (for the one with your tax return info, select “Tax return transcript”).
  • Get a user name and password for future access.

 

Compared to an IRS return transcript, a copy of your tax return costs $50 and takes up to 75 calendar days to get.
