How do I access my prior year (2016) return?

(If you're looking for information on last year's AGI, go here.)

There are different ways you can access your prior year return if you don’t have it saved.

You can:

  • Order a free tax return transcript online or by mail from the IRS that has a lot (but not all) of the information from last year’s return (not all people are able to do this).
  • Pay the IRS $50 for a copy of your return.
  • Look at the information below to get access to your return in TurboTax if you filed with us last year.

First, make sure you’re in the same TurboTax account as previous years. Then:

  • If you used Free Edition (with PLUS), Deluxe, Premier, or Self-Employed last year—You have access to your prior year online returns through October 31, 2018.
  • If you used Free Edition last year—You’ll need to upgrade (if you haven’t already) and pay for TurboTax before getting access to your prior year returns.

If you already have access, your returns will be under Your tax returns & documents at the bottom of the main screen when you first sign in to your account (if you're in your return already, select Tax Home in the left-hand menu first to get there).

If you don’t have access yet, select the situation below that best applies to you.

If you used Free Edition last year and have started a return in Free Edition this year

  1. Sign in to your account and go to your return.
  2. Select Upgrade in the left-hand menu and follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Then to pay, select File in the left-hand menu.
  4. Continue until you get to the Just a few steps left… screen and follow the on-screen instructions to pay.

If you used Free Edition last year and have already upgraded to a paid product this year

  1. Sign in to your account and go to your return.
  2. Select File in the left-hand menu.
  3. Continue until you get to the Just a few steps left… screen and follow the on-screen instructions to pay.

If you used Free Edition last year and haven't started a 2017 return in TurboTax yet

  1. Sign in to your account and select Start with Free Edition.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to keep PLUS.
  3. Then to pay, select File in the left-hand menu.
  4. Continue until you get to the Just a few steps left… screen and follow the on-screen instructions to pay.

If you used free Edition last year and have already filed your 2017 return in Free Edition this year

  1. Sign in to your account
  2. Go to Help, select Contact us, type in Add PLUS Benefits, and Continue.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to add PLUS and pay.

If you don’t see the option to select a prior year, it’s possible you're in the wrong account. Find more info under Related Information below.

You can also select one of the following for instructions specific to your TurboTax version:

TurboTax Online - Using a Smart Phone or other Mobile Device

TurboTax Mobile App

TurboTax Software (CD/Download)

If you’re only looking to print or access a PDF version of a prior year return that you completed using TurboTax Software (CD/Download), and you saved a PDF version of that return when you originally completed the return, you can search for the PDF on your computer, thumb drive, etc.

To access a prior year return for a different reason (that is, access the full *.tax file - not a PDF, which is an image of your return), you’ll need the TurboTax software (CD/Download) from the year you completed the return. If you don’t have the original CD or download:

Once you have installed the software on your computer:

  1. Select the File menu in the upper left.
  2. Now select Print or Save to PDF, depending on what you want to do. There are other options in the File menu as well.
