Why is the filing deadline on April 18 this year?
The traditional April 15 filing deadline is on a weekend this year (Saturday), the IRS filing deadline has been extended to Tuesday, April 18.
Why is that? Well, the District of Columbia celebrates Emancipation Day on April 16, which falls on a Sunday. Because it's a legal holiday, local government offices in D.C. (including the IRS) are closed on Monday.
And because the IRS is closed on April 15, the deadline for your federal return is extended to Tuesday, giving late filers an extra 3 days this year. Phew!
