Are nonprofits considered qualified charitable organizations?

Not necessarily. While most qualified charitable organizations happen to be nonprofits, simply having nonprofit status doesn't automatically make an organization eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.

To determine if the organization you donated to is eligible, ask them if they are a qualified organization for charitable purposes or search for them in the IRS Exempt Organizations lookup tool (select the first radio button before searching).
