Yes you can amend.  However, don't do anything, wait until you find out if your return is accepted or rejected by the IRS.

If you receive an acceptance, it would then be best to wait until you actually receive your refund (or the IRS cashes your payment) Then you can prepare, Print and Mail an amended return (form 1040-X)

If you receive a rejection, you can simply add your additional/changed information at the same time you correct the cause(s) for rejection, and re-submit your e-file.

Any changes you make at this time will NOT be seen by the IRS e-file.  IRS restriction = you CANNOT e-file an amended return.

Also note that the 1040-X form WILL NOT be available until after 2/12/15

Hello.  I understand that you have a question regarding how to add a dependent after you have already filed?  Well, I will be more than happy to assist you with your question.

Yes, you are  correct.  You will have to "Amend" your return if your return has been accepted by the IRS already. You cannot edit the return while it is in the pending status.

If they reject your return  because they suspect you left important information out, you can then edit it.  The IRS is not accepting any amendments until after 2/12/15.

Here is a link with frequently asked questions about amendments that may be helpful to you: http://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Amended-Return-Frequently-Asked-...

You will have to wait until you receive your refund, then if you have a balance, they will send the remaining balance in the form of a paper check. This can takes  about 3 -4 weeks after amending.

I do hope this has provided the needed explaination for you.  We do appreciate you for being a valued TurboTax customer.  Enjoy the rest of your day!

Suzanne 🙂

What if i have already filed and forgot to add a dependant can i amend my return

Will they include stimulus payment for the children after they are added to the amended return?

You can and should amend your return to add a dependent.  If your amendment is not processed to include the qualifying child in time for the stimulus payment this year you would include the qualifying child on your 2020 return, if applicable.  Any qualifying stimulus amounts not received this year will be added to your tax return next year.  For the stimulus payment the child must be under age 17.

A reminder here are the qualifications for a qualifying child dependent.

  1. The child must be your son, daughter, stepchild, foster child, brother, sister, half brother, half sister, stepbrother, stepsister, or a descendant of any of them.

  2. The child must be (a) under age 19 at the end of the year and younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), (b) under age 24 at the end of the year, a student, and younger than you (or your spouse if filing jointly), or (c) any age if permanently and totally disabled.

  3. The child must have lived with you for more than half of the year.

  4. The child must not have provided more than half of his or her own support for the year.

  5. The child must not be filing a joint return for the year (unless that joint return is filed only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax paid).

You got custody in February of 2020 or 2019? If 2020, then you won't amend your 2019 return to add them.

@Caslie93 If your e-filed return is pending, you will not be able to make any changes until it is accepted or rejected by the IRS. After that, you can amend your return. Please see below for more information.

What if i have already filed and forgot to add a dependant can i amend my return

Hello sir/Mam please how true is it that the irs amended area is not ready now, so it that means you can't amend tax returns now, because i have already received the original refund.

Thanks so much.

Yes, the amendment forms are projected to be ready around 25 March in TurboTax.  Go here to sign up for notifications.

Remember you have up to 3 years from the due date of the original return (15 Apr 2021) to file for a refund.
