State Loop indicates TurboTax is "up to date" after updating but won't allow you to start your state return

Some customers using Deluxe, Premier or Home and Business are reporting their state is already downloaded.  When you try to download your state, you get a message that "Your software is up to date" with the state product never installing and you are caught in a loop.

State Loop indicates TurboTax is "up to date" after updating but won't allow you to start your state return

 Solution for 2016 Desktop Software:

  To resolve, close TurboTax and then:

  1. Download this fix it tool and save it to your Desktop or other easy-to-find location.
  2. Right-click the downloaded file (TTCleanStates.exe) and select Run as Administrator.
  3. Select your state from the drop down menu and choose Remove (if you're having problems with multiple states, choose Remove all States).
  4. Once the tool finishes doing its thing, close it and reopen TurboTax.
  5. Follow the prompts to update TurboTax at the prompt – it should start downloading your state.
    • If not, click the State Taxes tab and download it from there.

If the fix-it fails, do this instead:

  1. Uninstall TurboTax.
  2. Double-click the CD or download file to start the reinstallation process with the following steps:
    1. Click Next on the Welcome Screen.
    2. Click I Agree on the License Agreement.
    3. On the next screen, where you see the install location, select Browse and change it to the location where TurboTax was originally installed. Normally, it's something like C:\Program Files (x86)\TurboTax\Deluxe 2016.
    4. Click Install after changing the location.
  3. Reopen TurboTax after installation and proceed.

  To resolve, close TurboTax and then:

State loop indicates TurboTax is "up to date" after reinstalling a different TurboTax version

Some customers are reporting that their state is unavailable after they uninstalled one TurboTax (Deluxe) product and installed another (Premier).  When you try to download your state, you get a message that "Your software is up to date" with the state product never installing and you are caught in a loop.

Solution for 2014 Desktop Software:

  To resolve, close TurboTax and then:

  1. Download this fix-it tool and save it to your Desktop or other easy-to-find location.
  2. Right-click the downloaded file (TTCleanStates.exe) and select Run as Administrator.
  3. Select your state from the drop down menu and choose Remove (if you're having problems with multiple states, choose Remove all States).
  4. Once the tool finishes doing its thing, close it and reopen TurboTax.
  5. Follow the prompts to update TurboTax at the prompt – it should start downloading your state.
    • If not, click the State Taxes tab and download it from there.
