Can I use direct debit to pay the IRS even though I'm not e-filing?
You won't see a direct debit option in TurboTax if you owe IRS taxes and are paper-filing, but you can use the IRS's Direct Pay service, which lets you pay your taxes directly out of your checking or savings account – just like direct debit.
There's no cost for using IRS Direct Pay. Here's what you do:
- In TurboTax, select the option I will mail a check when asked how you want to pay your owed taxes.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to print a filing copy of your return.
- Throw out (or better yet, recycle) the 1040-V voucher that prints out. You won't need it.
- Go to the IRS Direct Pay site and follow the instructions to submit your payment.
