You may notice a State Prep component in your update, either by itself or as part of a larger federal program update.
"State Prep" is a generic designation for an automatic state download.
Here's how it works:
The Updater predicts which state(s) you may need to file in, based on information you entered.
For example, if you told TurboTax that you are a resident of New Jersey, work in New York, and own rental property in Maine, the Updater anticipates that you may need to file returns in those 3 states.
When one or more of those states' programs are available for download, the Updater automatically downloads it to your computer. You'll see this as State Prep in the Updater.
In addition, if an update is released for your predicted state(s), and you haven't installed the state yet, this too shows up as State Prep.
But what if I don't want to prepare those states?
You're not obligated to prepare returns for any state programs that TurboTax automatically downloads as a State Prep file. The files are there only if you need them.
