What's a "State Prep" update?

You may notice a State Prep component in your update, either by itself or as part of a larger federal program update. Basically, it's an automatic state download.

When you update, the program makes a prediction about which state or states you may need, based on info you already entered on your return.

For example, if you told TurboTax that you are a resident of New Jersey, work in New York, and own rental property in Maine, the updater automatically downloads State Prep files for New Jersey, New York, and Maine once they become available for release.

If you don't install the state, you'll continue to get updated State Prep files whenever we release a new update for that state.

The important thing to remember is that you're not obligated to prepare returns for any state programs that TurboTax automatically downloads. The files are there only if you need them.
