Can I get a copy of my tax return from the IRS?

Yes, you can. When requesting your copy, you can choose either a tax return transcript, which is free, or an exact copy which costs $50 (the fee may be waived in Presidentially-declared disaster areas).

Tax return transcripts include most line items from your return and can be used if you need last year's AGI or other numbers from a previously-filed return. Most lenders will accept a transcript in lieu of an exact copy, but check with them first.

Here's what a transcript looks like. To order, go to the IRS Get Transcript page and choose an option: online (same-day) or by mail (5–10 days).

Exact copies include your W-2s and all attachments, and are generally available for returns filed for the current and past six years. Print and complete IRS Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return and be sure to follow the instructions on page 2 of the printout. Please allow up to 75 days for delivery.
