How do I file an IRS extension (Form 4868)?

An extension doesn't give you extra time to pay your taxes, which are due April 18 (June 15 for taxpayers out of the country). But even if you can't pay your taxes by the deadline, file an extension anyway so you can avoid the late-filing penalty.

To paper-file an IRS extension (Form 4868), make sure your return is open and then search for extend.

Click the Jump to extend link in the search results, answer Yes to Do you want to apply for an extension?, and follow the onscreen instructions. We'll tell you where to mail the extension form.

You can also download Form 4868 from the IRS website, print it out, and fill it in. Complete instructions are on the printout.

To e-file your extension, use our free TurboTax Easy Extension service (requires U.S. or APO/FPO/DPO address).
